Apple Watch sales have reportedly plunged since April

According to California-based research firm Slice Intelligence, Apple Watch sales have plunged since the launch of the device in April, as much as 85%.

The market-research report is based on electronic receipts sent to millions of email addresses following purchases. A method that Apple Insider says is “a metric that fails to account for demographic spread, sample viability and other factors that would yield accurate figures.”

Nevertheless, the numbers show that Apple has been selling fewer than 20,000 watches a day in the U.S. since the initial surge in April, and on some days fewer than 10,000. Quite the drop from the 200,000 per day sold in the first week.

What’s more, Slice says that two thirds of the watches sold so far have been the lower priced “Sport” version, which of course generate less revenue than the higher priced versions.

Apple has neither replied to any of the comments nor provided its own numbers.

However, it will be revealing its financial results for its third fiscal quarter of 2015 on July 21 to be followed by a conference call, which will hopefully provide more details into exactly just how well, or how poorly, the Apple Watch is doing.

It is worth noting that the report is entirely based on sales in the United States so it is difficult to say how well the smartwatch is doing elsewhere, such as in China notably, a country long known for reverently following the latest trends in technology.
