A dedicated portal was recently launched for Tamil Nadu Handloom Weavers' Cooperative Society, popularly known as Co-optex, where buyers abroad can order its products. It has tied up with DHL and Professional Couriers to deliver orders in the United States or China.

Co-optex is now focused on product diversification and e-commerce to expand its customer base.

Making profit for the fifth year in a row, Co-optex’s Deepavali festival sale last year touched Rs 140 crore, while during Pongal festival this January, it reached Rs 70 crore, according to a report in a leading Indian English-language daily.

The cooperative society has raked in Rs 260 crore till now this fiscal and the revenue stood at Rs 246 crore in the corresponding period last year.

Organic cotton saris, Ahimsa saris — the product generated after allowing silk worms to break away from the cocoon before the silk is retrieved, Paramakudi Pudinam — recreating silk saree motifs and designs in pure cotton, and Chettinad cotton saris are a huge hit online, according to Cooptex managing director T N Venkatesh.

The organisation, with a presence in 16 states, is working on regional differentiation, experimenting with colours and traditional motifs.
